What Box Do I Need

Wow, what a question this is!  It all depends on how much you want to spend!

Kodi takes a little time and perseverance to become familiar with.  In the early stages you may find that Kodi isn't overly user friendly.  But with a little persistence and patience it should be up and running for you in a very short time.

Exodus is really the only addon you need to install.  With Exodus running you can access almost everything!

Now what device should you consider on which to install Kodi?

I suggest an older laptop with a HDMI connector is the ideal way to first become acquainted with Kodi.

You can sit quietly with mouse in hand and your laptop connected via HDMI to your TV, and run Kodi that way.  If after a while that doesn't suit you can consider other platforms.

I am familiar with Android TV boxes (ATV's).

I have owned a $50 model ATV, I have bought as a gift, then helped set up and use a $70 model, had another ATV with a RRP of $140, then a Minix Neo X8H Plus valued at $180 and finally the top rated Nvidia Shield costing around $320.

ALL worked, all would run Kodi, and all would stream movies from the internet!

Considerations would be 2GB RAM, several USB ports, and a 9** processor running at least Android 5.1.

Most ATV's come in from sellers in China or the U.S.A.  You will find eBay sellers who deliver from Australia but all will be China acquired boxes.  Some will come with "Kodi All Set Up" promises.  Most likely you will uninstall these builds and just install and use the few addons you want.

In the range of boxes I have owned, the Minix valued at $180 could only run Android 4.4.  Therefore the $50 box running android 5.1 could do more than the $180 box and probably do it better as it had a more up to date processor.

As most ATV's come from overseas, to get an Australian power plug is a rarity.  More often than not you will require an adapter.  These are cheap on eBay!

Websites such as Gearbest, Geekbuying and Ali Express will sell you an ATV at whatever price you want to pay between $50 and over $200.  The Nvidia Shield ($320) can only be purchased from Amazon in the USA.

I would recommend paying extra for expedited delivery from overseas so build this into your costs. Free delivery can sometimes string out to well over a month or even longer.  Amazon's delivery time is usually quite good.

For the new user not wanting to spend a lot of money I would suggest a Beelink at around $70 (above) or the Xiaomi Mi (International Version) at around $100 to $115 (below).  I suggest you do your own research as some people have expressed disappointment at a lack of some playback ability features.

At the time of writing it seems for the first time buyer the Xiaomi Mi International Version is the way to go.  It only has a WIFI connection and only comes with one USB port as well.  But other features are excellent and it is seen as a cheaper cousin to the top of the range Nvidia Shield.

If you wish to make streaming TV your preferred entertainment medium, and the price is not off putting, the Nvidia Shield from Amazon in the USA is the way to go.

Some of the more basic models may lock up requiring a reboot to snap them beck into action from time time.  They will update more slowly or suffer other minor irritating hassles.  The Nvidia Shield is a no lock up, no hassles, top of the range unit.  At a cost of $320 compared to a Beelink at $70 it would want to be!
